  • Obama Says Pacific Trade Deal Helps US Workers

Transcript: Hi, everybody. I’ve talked a lot lately about why new trade deals are important to our economy. Today, I want to talk about why new trade deals are important to our values. They’re vital to middle-class economics -- the idea that this country does best when everyone gets their fair shot, everyone does their fair share, and everyone plays by the same set of rules. These are simple values. They’re American values. And we strive to make sure our own economy lives up to them, especially after a financial crisis brought about by recklessness and greed. But we also live in a world where our workers have to compete on a global scale. Right now, on an uneven playing field. Where the rules are different. And that’s why America has to write the rules of the global economy -- so that o...

He is serving his second term in the U.S. Senate after winning re-election in 2012 with 71 percent of the vote. Sanders previously served as mayor of Vermont’s largest city for eight years before defeating an incumbent Republican to be the sole congressperson for the state in the U.S. House of Representatives. He lives in Burlington, Vermont with his wife Jane and has four children and seven grandchildren. Bernard “Bernie” Sanders was born in Brooklyn, New York, to immigrant parents and grew up in a small, rent-controlled apartment. His father came to the United States from Poland at the age of 17 without much money or a formal education. While attending the University of Chicago, a 20-year-old Sanders led students in a multi-week sit-in to oppose segregation in off-campus housing owned by the university as a Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) officer. In August of 1963, Sanders took an overnight bus as an organizer for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee to hear Martin Luther King Jr.’s historic “I Have a Dream” speech firsthand at the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. After graduation, Bernie moved to Vermont where he worked as a carpenter and documentary filmmaker. In 1981, he was elected as mayor of Burlington as an Independent by a mere 10 votes, shocking the city’s political establishment by defeating a six-term, local machine mayor. In 1983, Bernie was re-elected by a 21 point margin with a record amount of voter turnout. Under his administration, the city made major strides in affordable housing, progressive taxation, environmental protection, child care, women’s rights, youth programs and the arts. In 1990, Sanders was elected to the House of Representatives as the first Independent in 40 years and joined the Democratic caucus. He was re-elected for eight terms, during which he voted against the deregulation of Wall Street, the Patriot Act, and the invasion of Iraq. In 2006, Sanders defeated the richest man in Vermont to win a seat in the U.S. Senate as an Independent. Known as a “practical and successful legislator,” Sanders served as chairman of the Committee on Veterans’ Affairs where he authored and passed the most significant veteran health care reform bill in recent history. While in the Senate, Sanders has fought tirelessly for working class Americans against the influence of big money in politics. In 2010, he gave an eight-and-a-half hour filibuster-like speech on the Senate floor in opposition to extending Bush-era tax breaks for the wealthy. In 2015, the Democratic leadership tapped Bernie to serve as the caucus’ ranking member of the Senate Budget Committee. Known for his consistency on the issues, Senator Sanders has supported the working class, women, communities of color, and the LGBT community throughout his career. He is an advocate for the environment, unions, and immigrants. He voted against Keystone XL, opposes the Trans-Pacific Partnership deal, wants to expand the Voting Rights Act, and pass the Equal Rights Amendment. A draft agreement leaked Wednesday shows the Obama administration is pushing a secret trade agreement that could vastly expand corporate power. A U.S. proposal for the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade pact between the United States and eight Pacific nations would allow foreign corporations operating in the U.S. to appeal key regulations to an international tribunal. The body would have the power to override U.S. law and issue penalties for failure to comply with its ruling. It's been branded as a trade agreement, but really it is enforceable corporate global governance. The agreement requires that every signatory country conform all of its laws, regulations and administrative procedures to what are 26 chapters of very comprehensive rules, only two of which have anything to do with trade. The other 24 chapters set a whole array of corporate new privileges and rights and handcuff governments, limit regulation. So the chapter that leaked—and it's actually now on the website of Citizens Trade Campaign --a national coalition for fair trade—that chapter is the chapter that sets up new rights and privileges for foreign investors, including their right to privately enforce this public treaty by suing our government, raiding our Treasury, over costs of complying with the same policies that all U.S. companies have to comply with. About 600 or so "corporate advisers" have access to information that even members of Congress don't. So, for two-and-a-half years, until this leak emerged, people have suspected what's going on, because, as you said, under U.S. law there are 600 official advisers, they have security clearance to see the text, they advise the U.S. position. Meanwhile, the senator, Ron Wyden, who is the chairman of the trade committee in the Senate, the committee with jurisdiction over the TPP, has been denied access to the text, as has his staff, who has security clearance, to a point where this man who has supported agreements like this in the past has filed legislation demanding he have the right to see the agreement that he's supposed to be having oversight with. He's on the Intelligence Committee, and he has security clearance, so he can see our nuclear secrets. He just can't see this corporate bill of rights that is trying to be slipped into effect in the name of being a trade agreement. It's a very elegant Trojan horse strategy. You brand it one thing, and then you put an agenda that could not survive sunshine into this agreement. I mean, the U.S. is even opposing proposals in this agreement to try and make sure countries don't have the ability to use financial regulation to ensure financial stability. So what we're talking about with this leaked chapter is literally a parallel system of justice. People have domestic laws and courts, trying to defend our rights and get our needs met. Corporations would have a parallel system of private attorneys, three of them, no conflict-of-interest laws. The U.S. and the other countries would submit themselves to the jurisdiction of this corporate kangaroo court, and these three random attorneys would have the right to order the U.S. government to pay unlimited amounts of our tax dollars to corporations and investors who, A, claim regulatory costs need to be refunded, or, B, are saying they're not being treated well enough, regardless if the policies they dislike are the exact same ones that apply to all of us. Even under NAFTA's system, which has some of this, $350 million have already been paid out to corporations by governments, over toxics bans, zoning laws, timber rules. The reason why it is so incredibly important that this agreement be exposed is this could well be the last agreement that's negotiated. So, many of your listeners and viewers have been involved in the sneaky way trade agreements have been used by corporations to limit regulation and to foster a race to the bottom since NAFTA. And each of these agreements has gotten bolder, more expansive in its limits on government regulation and in its granting of corporate powers. This one could be the end, because what they intend to do is leave it open, once it's done, for any other country to join. So, this is an agreement that ultimately could have the whole world in it as a set of binding corporate guarantees of new rights and privileges, enforced with cash sanctions and trade sanctions. It is not an exaggeration to say that the TPP threatens to become a regime of binding global governance, right at the time that the Occupy movement and movements around the world are demanding more power and control. This is the fightback. This is locking in the bad old way plus. And in addition, the way that the agreement is being negotiated, these rules would require that you not only change all of your existing laws—so good progressive laws would have to be gotten rid of—but that, in the future, you don't create new laws.

"President Barack Obama's administration on Monday formally invited Mexico to join controversial free trade negotiations known as the Trans-Pacific Partnership, reinforcing consumer and environmental group concerns that the deal may establish broad new powers for corporations. The invitation comes less than one week after a leaked U.S. document sparked an uproar because it proposed terms that would grant corporations the ability to bypass U.S. public interest laws and regulations in courts here and appeal directly to international tribunals. U.S. advocacy groups and some members of Congress have criticized the U.S. proposals...".* The Young Turks host Cenk Uygur breaks it down. *Read more here from Zach Carter at The Huffington Post: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/06/19/obama-trade-mexico-trans-pacific-partnership_n_1607318.html Support The Young Turks by Subscribing http://bit.ly/TYTonYouTube Like Us on Facebook: Follow Us on Twitter: http://twitter.com/theyoungturks

And that’s why America has to write the rules of the global economy -- so that our workers can compete on a level playing field. I understand why a lot of people are skeptical of trade deals. Past deals didn’t always live up to the hype. They didn’t include the kind of protections we’re fighting for today. We have lessons to learn from the past -- and we have learned them. But trying to stop a global economy at our shores isn’t one of those lessons. We can’t surrender to the future -- because we are meant to win the future. If America doesn’t shape the rules of the global economy today, to benefit our workers, while our economy is in a position of new global strength, then China will write those rules. I’ve seen towns where manufacturing collapsed, plants closed down, and jobs dried up. And I refuse to accept that for our workers. Because I know when the playing field is level, nobody can beat us. That’s why, when I took office, we started thinking about how to revamp trade in a way that actually works for working Americans. And that’s what we’ve done with a new trade partnership we’re negotiating in the Asia-Pacific -- home to the world’s fastest-growing markets. It’s the highest-standard trade agreement in history. It’s got strong provisions for workers and the environment -- provisions that, unlike in past agreements, are actually enforceable. If you want in, you have to meet these standards. If you don’t, then you’re out. Once you’re a part of this partnership, if you violate your responsibilities, there are actually consequences. And because it would include Canada and Mexico, it fixes a lot of what was wrong with NAFTA, too. So this isn’t a race to the bottom, for lower wages and working conditions. The trade agreements I’m negotiating will drive a race to the top. And we’re making sure American workers can retool through training programs and community colleges, and use new skills to transition into new jobs. If I didn’t think this was the right thing to do for working families, I wouldn’t be fighting for it. We’ve spent the past six years trying to rescue the economy, retool the auto industry, and revitalize American manufacturing. And if there were ever an agreement that undercut that progress, or hurt those workers, I wouldn’t sign it. My entire presidency is about helping working families recover from recession and rebuild for the future. As long as I’m President, that’s what I’ll keep fighting to do. Thanks, and have a great weekend.

Finally, finally, finally the mainstream media is talking about the TPP. You know, the Trans-Pacific Partnership: The massive 12-nation international trade deal that comprises nearly 40% of the world's commerce and is a huge giveaway to corporate interests at the expense of workers and environment. The MSM has finally caught wind 4 years late. BUT, of course, the way they're talking about it is more shallow than a puddle and only in reference to the horse race between Hillary and Trump. The Trans-Pacific Partnership is one of the biggest trade deals the U.S. has ever negotiated, but the public isn't privy to it. Follow Elizabeth Hagedorn: http://www.twitter.com/elizhagedorn See more at http://www.newsy.com Transcript: Depending on who you talk to, the Trans-Pacific Partnership is either "a vital piece of middle-class economics," as President Obama called it, or "a new easy way for corporations to shut down in America," said Sen. Bernie Sanders, an Independent from Vermont. Problem is, we have no real way of knowing. The trade agreement — one of the biggest in American history — is classified. Journalists and members of the public can't read it. Most of it, anyway. WikiLeaks has published the draft texts for a few chapters, focusing on intellectual property rights and the environment. Lawmakers can see the full text, but they've got to jump through hoops to get their hands on it. (Video via House Democrats) Politico explains,"If you're a member who wants to read the text, you've got to go to a room in the basement of the Capitol Visitor Center and be handed it one section at a time, watched over as you read, and forced to hand over any notes you make before leaving." "Wait a minute. I'm going to take notes, and then you're going to take my notes away from me, and then you're going to have them in a file, and then you can read my notes? Not on your life," said Sen. Barbara Boxer, a Democrat from California. That's been the general sentiment among critics — mostly liberal Democrats — who say the near total secrecy surrounding the giant, legally binding trade deal is unwarranted. The administration sees it differently, saying a certain level of confidentiality — as with most trade deals — is needed to ensure potential trade partners can communicate with a "high degree of candor, creativity, and mutual trust." In other words, the White House doesn't want to lay all its cards on the table before it has to and risk undermining negotiations with the 11 other governments involved. And it's not as though the public won't ever have a chance to read the TPP. The fine print will be made public 60 days before the president sends the deal to Congress. "There will be months of review. Every T crossed, every I dotted. Everybody is going to be able to see exactly what's in it," President Obama said during a trade forum at Nike's headquarters. Many corporate lawyers and lobbyists already have. "An industry adviser from the Motion Picture Association can sit at their desk with a laptop, enter their username and password and see the negotiating text of a proposed trade agreement. Virtually no one in the Congress ... has the ability to do that," said Sen. Ron Wyden, a Democrat from Oregon. Over 500 advisers — all members of appointed trade advisory committees — are involved in the talks and have access to draft documents. This video includes images from Getty Images. TransCanada is suing the U.S. government for blocking the construction of the Keystone XL pipeline. The company argued in their federal court filings that President Obama had overstepped his Constitutional powers in putting the brakes on the project. The lawsuit is being brought under the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and the company is seeking $15 billion in damages from the federal government.
